How should a Christian behave at worldly celebrations?

Celebration is not in itself evil: we see Jesus going to a feast (Jn 7). But a Christian must know how to enjoy himself. I advise young engaged couples to set aside money in their wedding budget for the Word of God retreat for couples in Kribi each January. Many do not do so and are saddened when the time comes. Yet it is a moment of deep spirituality, but also a time of celebration. I also advise young people to hold their wedding celebration during the daytime. This allows them to save money and to avoid the guests getting out of hand. In Uganda, a few years ago, the Church had asked that wedding celebrations take place during the daytime because it had been observed that it was during nighttime celebrations that the AIDS virus was most transmitted. It is deplorable to note that it is sometimes the newly married young women who demand grand evening celebrations. I sometimes go to worldly celebrations at my workplace. When I attend a dinner, for example, I make the sign of the cross without shame before the meal because I am a Christian. Even dancing and music must be discerned. Yet one must not accept every invitation. Do not forget: it is very difficult to enter a nightclub and to come out holier than when you went in. One must exercise self-control during celebrations, whether when it comes to drink or to carnal desire. We recall King Herod who, during the feast, is so carried away that he beheads John the Baptist (Mk 6:14-29). Do not yield to temptation.
