The Supreme Pontiff drew on the parable of the widow who sought justice. “The widow,” Francis recounts, “by dint of pleading with a dishonest judge, managed to obtain justice.” And Jesus concludes, as paraphrased by the Pope: if the widow succeeded in convincing the judge, do you think that God will not listen to us if we pray to him with insistence? Francis invited the faithful to follow the widow of the Gospel and to pray always, without fear of growing weary. “Why does God want this, he who knows our needs? What is the meaning of insisting with God?” the Pope then asks. “God invites us to pray with insistence, not because he does not know what we need,” Francis answers. “On the contrary, he always listens and knows everything about us, with love.” “In our daily journey,” the Holy Father continues, “especially in difficulty, in the struggle against evil within us and outside us, the Lord is at our side. We fight close to him, and our weapon is precisely prayer, which makes us feel his presence, his mercy, his help. God is our ally, our faith in him is our strength, and prayer is the expression of our faith.” And the Pope concludes: “Jesus assures us of victory, but he asks: when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? If faith is extinguished, prayer is extinguished, and we walk in darkness, we lose our way on the path of life.”
